How to Convert M2TS to MP4 on Windows
M2TS files show up in AVCHD camcorder folders and Blu-ray-style disc structures. They can be large, may contain more than one audio track, and often refuse to open in a phone or editor. Here is a practical Windows workflow.
Fastest Windows method: copy the BDMV folder, add the M2TS files from BDMV/STREAM to Raize HD Video Converter, choose MP4 at 1080p, and convert the batch. Free method: HandBrake or FFmpeg, if you are comfortable with a manual workflow.
What M2TS is
M2TS is an MPEG-2 transport stream used in AVCHD and Blu-ray-style structures. It carries H.264 video and usually AC-3, PCM or other audio. The “M2” naming is associated with the 192-byte packet format used in BDAV/Blu-ray transport streams; MTS files are the camcorder-side sibling.
In an AVCHD camera folder, you will usually see:
PRIVATE/
AVCHD/
BDMV/
STREAM/ ← .MTS or .M2TS clips
PLAYLIST/
CLIPINF/
INDEX.BDM
In a Blu-ray-style folder, the path is often BDMV/STREAM without the PRIVATE/AVCHD wrapper. The largest .m2ts files are usually the main content; smaller files may be menus or extras.
The container is not the same as MP4. A phone or editor that plays MP4 may still refuse M2TS, even though the video inside is H.264.
Before you start
- Copy the folder, not just the file. The
STREAMfolder has the clips; the playlist and metadata folders help some tools understand the structure. - Identify the main clips. Sort
STREAMby size. The largest files are usually the recordings; small files may be menus or intros. - Check the audio tracks. M2TS files can contain more than one audio track. Decide which one you need before converting.
- Keep the source. Do not delete the folder until the MP4 outputs are verified and backed up.
Method 1: Raize HD Video Converter (Windows)
- Add the M2TS files. Drag the files from
BDMV/STREAMinto the app, or use the Add button. - Choose MP4. Select MP4 output. For archive, use 1920×1080 and the source frame rate. For sharing, 1280×720 is smaller.
- Set the bitrate. Start at 10–16 Mbps for 1080p archive, or 6–8 Mbps for sharing. Very high bitrates mainly increase file size.
- Choose the output folder. Keep it separate from the source folder.
- Convert and verify. Check audio sync, the correct audio track, orientation and duration on one clip before converting the rest.
A simple converter may take the primary audio track only. If your M2TS has commentary or multiple languages, check which track the output uses. For complex multi-track discs, a dedicated remux tool may be a better fit.
Method 2: HandBrake or FFmpeg (free)
HandBrake can open many M2TS files directly. Choose the MP4 container, H.264 video and AAC audio. If HandBrake cannot open the folder structure, open the largest .m2ts file from STREAM directly.
FFmpeg is the most flexible option if you are comfortable with a command line. A simple re-encode looks like this:
ffmpeg -i input.m2ts -c:v libx264 -crf 20 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mp4
If the video is already H.264 and you only need a container change, a remux may work and avoid re-encoding:
ffmpeg -i input.m2ts -c copy output.mp4
Test the remux first; some players dislike the result if the stream has timing quirks. If it plays, it is the fastest and highest-quality option.
Quality and audio
- Start from the highest-quality source. Use the largest main clip, not a menu or preview file.
- Keep 1080p for archive. Downscale only for sharing or phone storage.
- Match the source frame rate. Do not force 60 fps on 30 fps footage.
- Pick the right audio track. If the source has stereo and surround, choose the one you need. AAC 192–256 kbps is a good default for stereo.
- Consider remux before re-encode. If the video is already H.264,
ffmpeg -c copycan avoid quality loss. Test the output first. - Large files are normal. A 1080p M2TS can be several gigabytes. Make sure the output drive has room.
Troubleshooting
M2TS file will not open
Copy it from the source again and check it with MediaInfo. A partial copy, a menu file, or a file with an unusual codec may fail. Try the largest file in STREAM first.
Only one audio track is present
Many simple converters take the primary track. If you need a different language or commentary, use a tool that lets you select the track, or remux with FFmpeg and map the audio stream explicitly.
Audio and video drift apart
Use a constant frame rate and avoid trimming the file before conversion. If the source has variable timing, try HandBrake or FFmpeg with explicit stream mapping.
Output has combing
The source may be interlaced. Enable deinterlacing. If your converter has no option, use HandBrake’s Decomb/Yadif filters.
Conversion stops on a large file
Check free disk space and try a shorter clip. A 4 GB source can produce a large temporary file. Splitting long recordings into smaller clips before conversion is also an option.

FAQ
What is the difference between M2TS and MTS?
They are closely related MPEG transport streams. M2TS is often used in AVCHD and Blu-ray folder structures; MTS is the camcorder-side extension. The video is usually H.264 in both.
Can VLC play M2TS files?
Usually yes. VLC can play most M2TS files, including AVCHD clips. That solves playback but does not create an MP4 for phones, editors or cloud backup.
Can I convert M2TS from a Blu-ray disc?
This guide focuses on camcorder footage and personal files. If you have a disc, use a workflow that respects your local laws and the disc’s copy protection. The Raize converter is a format converter, not a disc ripper.
Why is the audio track missing after conversion?
Some M2TS files contain multiple audio tracks. A simple converter may take only the primary track. Choose an AAC output and check which track the source uses.
Does it support 4K M2TS?
No. The HD converter is designed for SD and HD footage up to 1080p. It is not a 4K or HEVC tool.
Can I batch convert a whole folder?
Yes. Add the M2TS files from BDMV/STREAM to the queue, choose one profile, and start the batch.
